Digital Photography Tutorial on Infrared .
18th May 2008
The colours of visible light by which we humans see the world around us are only a very small part of the total spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. The other parts of this spectrum are invisible to us, but nevertheless have an effect on us. We're all familiar with the effects of ultraviolet light, which has a shorter wavelength than visible light and is thus outside our ken. It's UV light that gives us a suntan and makes our teeth, underwear and dandruff glow in a nightclub, but then again it can also give us skin cancer.
At the other end of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, the longer wavelengths are known as infrared. Humans feel these wavelengths as heat, and they are often used in the hand held massagers used to help with those aches and pains.
Infrared light is emitted by the sun and other hot objects, and today is used in thermograph cameras for tracking people at night etc. The electromagnetic spectrum doesn't end there though, beyond ultraviolet lie Gamma rays and X-rays, (both very nasty to us humans) while longer wavelengths than infrared include microwaves and radio waves.
But enough of this, what fun can we have with infrared light and our digital cameras?
